iCloud Beta just took on a new look, and it’s not an unfamiliar one. In a time where the web is flooded with pictures and videos of iOS 7 (read about iOS 7 here), seeing those child-like, yet appeasing icons is no new surprise. But seeing them on iCloud is something that I honestly didn’t expect. Not so soon at least.
Apple has, after six continuous (and mostly successful) versions of iOS, changed the look and feel of the thing. However, the look and feel of Mac OS X is more or less the same as it has been for the past decade or so, and I’m not complaining either. Even for a company that strives ever so hard to maintain some sort of common platform across all of their devices, keeping different app icons for Mac OS X and iOS seems fair, considering that there should be some sort of distinction between their mobile and computer platforms, especially considering how simplified the former are.
iCloud is like common territory for both of these ecosystems, and therefore, I thought it made sense for it to keep the look that it’s had right from its inception. However, after thinking about it for a bit, I realized that it probably made sense for the change, considering that iCloud contains mostly mobile apps (apart from iWork on iCloud, which has desktop functionality).
Don’t get me wrong. Seeing the new look (if not the feel) bleed into the iCloud ecosystem is definitely pleasant to the eye. The feel is more or less the same, with a new blurred out look during the sign in process. iWork on iCloud (Beta) still looks the same though, and it probably will, maintaining common ground with its desktop counterpart.
