Take Note of the Note 3

Samsung launched the new Note yesterday, the much anticipated Samsung Galaxy Note 3. With a stunning new back (made of faux-leather) and a great new S Pen, the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 is definitely something, but I wouldn’t recommend it for people with the Note 2. The Note 2 was a huge increment after the original Note defined a new category, but the Note 3 has more software innovation than hardware innovation.

Fortunately, the new Note has great screen, at 5.7-inches diagonally and a whopping 1080p to display. With pixel density of 386ppi, I bet Samsung will hold a contest wherein if you see a pixel, you get the phone for free. The phablet sports a few more hardware enhancements, such as 3GB of RAM, a 13 MP rear-facing camera (like the Samsung Galazy S4), the ability to record in 4K (yep! You read that right!), a 2 MP front-facing camera (that can record in 1080p) a few other things.

On the software front, Samsung announced various new innovations. Action Memo, allowing users to write notes in words and/or numbers and port them to other apps as plain-text, is a very useful tool, though I see more uses for it in the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 Edition. S Finder allows users to search for their written notes by tping in a search-query. The new S Notes now synchronizes with various services, such as EverNote, to give you a great experience. Users can also create a Scrapbook by selecting areas of an app and storing it as a picture with written word around it, if necessary. Advanced Multi-Window functionality was a joy to see, allowing users to easily drag content from one app to another as long as both are open. Lastly, Pen Windows allows users to draw any sort of rectangle on an open app and allow the user to then convert the app into a floating windows of that shape on top of any other app. Here’s probably where the 3GB of RAM comes in.

All in all, the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 is a great phablet. However, as I’ve said before, the Note 2 is almost just as good. You’re not missing out on much by buying another Android smart phone in the same price range. Personally, I think the one phone that’s worth the rage is the Sony Xperia Z1, but more of that later. If you enjoyed what you just read, then you can click here to view a list of articles by the same author(s).
