Yes, you read that right. Android. On a Nokia! For the past few weeks, Nokia’s long rumored Android phone, dubbed Nokia X, has been making its rounds of the internet. Codenamed Normandy, this device has been leaked through various different sources and most people, including me, believe that the Nokia X will be announced soon.
The specifications of the device are expected to be similar to a low-budget Android device. Supposedly available in 6 different colors, the device is believed to house a 1GHz or 1.2GHz dual-core processor 512MB of RAM and 4GB on device storage. We expect that there will be a microSD card slot present for memory expansion. The Nokia X will feature a 4″ screen with a 5MP camera and a 1,500mAh battery inside. The device will most likely run on KitKat (Android 4.4.1). Certain screenshots also hint at dual-SIM capabilities.
Well, honestly, these specs don’t look very promising and they are nowhere near those of the best Android smartphone out there (read Nexus 5). So you may be wondering why I am still excited about the Nokia X. The main reason for this is the fact that the Nokia X is said be running a heavily customized version of Android. While the device will still be running KitKat, a few leaked screenshots show that the look will be very similar to that of the Windows Phone OS. The power of Android with a Windows Phone skin! How great is that! It is like a win-win for everyone, except perhaps Microsoft (And I don’t think they will be too happy about this considering that they bought Nokia not too long ago).
Ever since the decline of Nokia and the Dark-Knight-like rise of Android a few years back, people have been wondering when, if ever, will Nokia move towards Android. With the Mobile World Conference right around the corner (We will be blogging about our expectations from the MWC 2014 soon), these rumors have got a lot of people excited to see whether or not Nokia can shock us again as they did in 2012 with the 808 PureView cameraphone. With the Nokia press conference scheduled for the 24th of February at 7:30AM GMT, maybe we aren’t too far from the day when we finally get to see the first Android powered Nokia device.
