Google’s new version of the Android Jelly Bean is faster, smoother and more responsive than its predecessor. The Android 4.2.1 Jelly Bean is packed with all new features while fixing a few bugs in the older version of the Jelly Bean. Luckily we haven’t seen any heinous errors this time. With the last version o the Jelly Bean Google had made the mistake of forgetting to add December to the People app in the 4.2 so the 4.2.1 update brings back the month of December.
Improvements in the hardware-accelerated 2D renderer make common animations much faster. Touch latency is reduced, which is good because no one wants a lagging touch.
In the 4.2.1 we can engage multiple users on to a single screen. On a multiuser device each user is given their own environment. They have their own apps, widgets, home screen, settings, accounts etc. This gives sharing a whole knew twist.
In this latest update users can place app widgets directly on their lock screen making these easier to engage. We also see the introduction of ‘Daydream’. Daydream is a type of screen saver mode which is more interactive than your normal screensaver. Daydreams are a hybrid combination of screen savers and live wallpapers that let you display any information that you want.
A new UI option called Presentation takes external display beyond mirroring. We can now project parts of our screen on to another platform instead of the whole thing. You can create as many presentations as you need while displaying whatever you want. Android 4.2 introduces full native support for RTL (right-to-left) layouts, including layout mirroring. Now we can enjoy apps in whatever language regardless if the script reads form right-to-left or left-to-right. It also includes new dictionaries for Danish, Greek, Finnish, Lithuanian, Latvian, Polish, Slovenian, Serbian, Swedish and Turkish.
The new UI supports nested fragments, for any Fragment, a new Fragment manager lets you insert other Fragments as child nodes in the View hierarchy.
Among the new accessibility features the one that impresses me the most is the ability to differentiate between whether a touch is an accessibility touch (fast) or an exploration touch (slow). When the touch interaction ends the system is notified which type of touch interaction it was. Also added in Android 4.2 is a new accessibility feedback type for Braille devices. This honestly is pure genius. This is the feature that impresses me the most. In fact I’m a little surprised Apple hasn’t come up with this already. Keep your eyes open for a potential lawsuit.
A new camera hardware interface and pipeline for improved performance has been introduced. Now on supported devices, apps can use a new HDR (high dynamic range) camera scene mode to capture an image using HDR imaging techniques. This is great for all you photography enthusiasts out there.
New platform technologies include security enhancements such as Application verification, More control of premium SMS, Certificate pinning etc. Also included are a new Bluetooth stack, low latency audio and a new camera hardware interface.
All in all, the new version of the Android Jelly Bean is a brilliant improvement to its predecessor. Also this new version is available as an update so there is no worry regarding disseminating this version throughout the Android world.
